In 1997, she lost in the qualifying rounds of her first three tournaments before winning her first main-draw match in November at the Ameritech Cup Chicago. Serena Williams Playing Style

Serena Williams is first and foremost a baseline player. Her game is built around taking control of rallies early through the use of a powerful serve, and strong backhands and forehands. Her serve is a potent weapon and has been timed at 129mph, second only to Venus in the female all time ranks.

Serena is also an excellent volleyer, which gives her significant advantages at the net. She also utilizes the drop shot to great effect, a shot not many female professionals can use.

Serena's double handed backhand is considered the best on the womens circuit. She is able to hit winners from any position on the court.

Due to her aggressive playing style, Serena often suffers an unusually high number of unforced errors. This is not to say she is bad defensively, just that she commits errors because she looks for winners with every shot.

Serena Williams Early Life

Serena Williams is of African American heritage and began playing Tennis at the age of four. Both Serena and her sister Venus were home schooled, which means effectively that her father was her first Tennis coach. When Serena was nine years old, the family moved to West Palm Beach so that Serena could attend the Rick Macci Tennis Academy. In 1995, Richard Williams pulled both Venus and Serena out of the Academy and took on their coaching himself, full time.

Whilst at the Academy, Rick and Richard sometimes clashed and did not always agree. Rick did however, respect that Richard 'treated his daughters like kids, allowing them to be little girls'.

Richard stopped sending both Serena and Venus to national tournaments when Serena was ten years old as Richard wanted the girls to slow down and focus on school work.
